Introduction
This is perhaps one of Cape Town's best scuba dive for
both it's sharks and the beauty of the Kelp forest.
Pyramid Rock is situated near the Cape of Good Hope
on the False Bay side of Cape Town.
The
Dive
Scuba
Dive with Seven-gill at Pyramid Rock, south of Simon's
Town ? a shallow, 10m, dive through a thick forest of
kelp where the light filters down on two a boulder strewn
underwater landscape of hypnotic beauty.?Here and there
there is a sandy open patch where, at the Divemaster's
signal, divers settle on the bottom to wait, peering
through the dense vegetation. Soon the unmistakable
shape of a large fusiform body will move in partly obscured
by the kelp at the limit of visibility about 15 metres
away. Seven-gill cow sharks can reach a massive 3.5m
and will often move in for a closer look. Once you have
seen one shark, generally other Seven gil Cow Sharks
will be discerned moving like shadows in and out of
the Kelp. Most of the 450-plus species of sharks that
we know of have evolved to have 5 gills, but the sixgill
and sevengill species are far more primitive, and almost
prehistoric looking.
Apart from Seven-gill Cow Sharks there are also a multitude
of other endemic marine animals like Red Romans, Steenbras,
Musselcrackers, Nudibranchs, Puffadder Shy Sharks and
Pyjama Sharks.
The dive site is accessed by RIB boat a five minute
journey from the launch site. Guest can be collected
at their hotel in Cape Town by our own fleet of vehicles.
The drive is about 45mins from the centre of Cape Town.

The
dive sites are accessed from a traditional Dhow which
make for a novel experience and adds to the entire atmosphere.
The accommodation and food is superb, and all this on
a quint-essential tropical island in the warm Indian Ocean,
surrounded by palm trees and cool sea breezes.
Sounds too good to be true, but it was and we had to keep
reminding ourselves that this was not a dream!
And even better...Mafia Island is not too bad on the wallet
either.
